Frequently asked questions
What is Smooth Recorder?
A native Mac app for screenshots and screen recordings. Press ⌥1, pick an area, a window or the full screen, and make a screenshot, a recording, a GIF, a scrolling capture or copy the text. It comes with a screenshot editor and a recording studio.
Which Macs does it run on?
Any Mac on macOS 15 Sequoia or later. On macOS 26 it uses the newer system features when they're available.
What can I capture?
Screenshots of an area, a window or the full screen. Screen recordings with your camera, microphone and system audio. Looping GIFs. One tall screenshot of a long, scrolling page. And the text from anything on screen.
Where do I find it after installing?
In the Dock, not the menu bar. Click the icon for your Library, or right-click it for Capture, Recent, Library and Settings. ⌥1 works from anywhere, and you can change it in Settings.
How do the zooms work?
Studio zooms in where you clicked while recording, with a smooth cursor and click effects. Every zoom sits on the timeline, so you can move, resize or remove it.
How do captions work?
If you recorded with a microphone, Studio transcribes your voice on your Mac. Edit the lines, place them at the top, middle or bottom, and cut the video by deleting words from the transcript.
What can I export?
Screenshots as PNG or JPG. Recordings as MP4 for anywhere, MOV for Keynote and Final Cut, both at up to 60 fps, or GIF for docs, chat and READMEs.
Is it a subscription?
No. You pay once and get a lifetime license. Because the full app is yours right away, all sales are final and there are no refunds.
How many Macs can I use it on?
One license is for one person, active on one Mac at a time. Getting a new Mac? Deactivate it on the old one in Settings › License, or email hello@smoothrecorder.com and we'll free it.
I lost my license key. Where is it?
In your account: sign in at smoothrecorder.com/account with the email you bought with, and you'll get a secure link to your key and receipts. It's also in the email you got after buying.
Where are my captures stored?
On your Mac. Every capture is in the Library, and Save puts a copy in the folder you choose. Text recognition, transcription and redaction all run on device.
