01Who we are
Smooth Recorder (“we”, “us”) makes the Smooth Recorder app for Mac and runs smoothrecorder.com. We decide how the small amount of personal data described here is used. You can reach us at hello@smoothrecorder.com.
02What stays on your Mac
Smooth Recorder is a native Mac app. The things you make with it are processed and stored on your Mac:
- Screenshots, recordings, GIFs, scrolling captures and the edits you make to them.
- Text recognition (copying text from the screen) and Smart Redact.
- Transcripts and captions, made with Apple's on-device speech recognition.
- Your settings and saved looks.
Captures live in the app's Library on your Mac, and a copy goes to the folder you choose when you save. We don't receive any of it, and we have no way to see it.
macOS asks your permission before the app can record the screen, the camera or the microphone. The app uses them only while you are capturing, and you can turn them off at any time in System Settings.
03When the app goes online
The app has no analytics, no ads and no tracking. It connects to the internet only in these cases:
- Checking for updates. When you click Check for Updates, or if you turn on automatic checks, the app fetches our update feed, which is hosted on GitHub. Like any web request, this shows GitHub your IP address and the app version. Automatic checks are off unless you turn them on.
- Sharing to your own server. If you set up a sharing server, captures you choose to share are uploaded to that server. Its owner, usually you, is responsible for that data.
04When you buy
Payments are handled by Dodo Payments. You enter your card details with them, not with us, and their privacy policy covers what they do with it. From a purchase we receive:
- Your name and email address.
- Your country, for tax.
- What you bought, when, and the price you paid.
- Your license key.
We use this to deliver and verify your license, send receipts and important product emails, answer support requests, and meet our tax and accounting obligations. We never see your full card number.
05This website
smoothrecorder.com uses Piqo, a privacy-friendly analytics service, to count visits: which pages are viewed, where visitors came from, and their device type and country. Piqo sets no cookies, doesn't fingerprint visitors, and doesn't build a profile of you; visitors are counted with an ID that changes every day. We use this only to understand how the site is used. There's no advertising and no advertising cookies, and our fonts are served from our own domain. Like every website, our hosting provider keeps short-lived server logs (IP address, browser and the page requested) to keep the site running and secure.

07How long we keep it
We keep purchase records for as long as tax and accounting law requires. Support emails are kept while we help you and for a reasonable time after, then deleted. Everything on your Mac stays until you delete it.
08Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to show you the personal data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or send it to you in a portable format. You can also object to how we use it. Depending on where you live, laws such as the GDPR, the UK GDPR and the CCPA give you these rights and more.
Email hello@smoothrecorder.com and we'll reply within 30 days. If you're not happy with our answer, you can complain to your local data protection authority.
09International transfers
Our service providers may process data in other countries. When they do, we rely on the safeguards the law requires, such as standard contractual clauses.
10Security
Because your captures never reach us, the most sensitive data you create is protected by your Mac itself. For the data we do hold, we limit access, use providers with strong security practices and encrypt data in transit. No system is perfectly secure, so please tell us at hello@smoothrecorder.com if you find a problem.
11Children
Smooth Recorder isn't meant for children under 13, or under 16 where local law sets that age. We don't knowingly collect their data. If you think a child has bought from us, contact us and we'll delete it.
12Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of the page. If a change affects how we use your data in a meaningful way, we'll tell customers by email before it takes effect.
