Key takeaways

  • In Keynote, choose Play > Record Slideshow to record your voice as you advance the slides, then export it with File > Export To > Movie.
  • PowerPoint for Mac has a Record feature on the Slide Show tab, and File > Export saves the result as MP4 or MOV.
  • To record any slides, including Google Slides or Canva, screen record the presentation with your mic using ⇧⌘5 or a recorder app.
  • For your face on screen, PowerPoint can add a camera feed (Cameo), Keynote can put live video on a slide, and recorder apps can add a webcam bubble.
  • Record each section separately and use a decent mic: sound matters more than video quality for a presentation.

To record a presentation on a Mac, use the recorder built into your slide app or record your screen while you present. In Keynote, choose Play > Record Slideshow, talk through your slides, then export a video with File > Export To > Movie. In PowerPoint for Mac, click Record on the Slide Show tab and export with File > Export. For any other slides, or to add a webcam bubble and polish, press ⇧⌘5 or use a screen recorder, with your microphone turned on.

Which one fits:

  • You built the deck in Keynote or PowerPoint and just need a narrated video: use the app's own recorder. Slides stay sharp, and you can re-record one slide without redoing the rest.
  • Your slides live in Google Slides, Canva, Pitch or a PDF: screen record them.
  • You want to switch between slides and a live demo, or add a webcam bubble, captions and zooms afterward: screen record with an app.

How to record a Keynote presentation with your voice

Keynote's Record Slideshow saves your narration and your timing with the presentation. Apple's Keynote guide has the full details.

  1. Open the presentation and click the slide you want to start on in the slide navigator.
  2. Choose Play > Record Slideshow. The presenter display opens with the recording controls at the bottom.
  3. Click the Start Recording toggle. A 3-second countdown runs, then you're live.
  4. Press the → key for the next slide or build, and ← to go back. To jump, type a slide number and press Return.
  5. Click Mute to stop recording your voice for a moment, and click it again to resume.
  6. Click the Start Recording toggle again to stop, and the Play button to watch it back. Press Esc to leave.

Made a mistake? Drag the playback slider to just before it, click Start Recording and choose Record to record over from there. To start fresh, choose Play > Clear Recording.

Export the Keynote recording as a video

The recording plays inside Keynote. To share it as a movie file:

  1. Choose File > Export To > Movie.
  2. Set Playback to Slideshow Recording, so your narration and timing are used.
  3. Choose a Resolution. Under Advanced Options you can change the frame rate and movie format.
  4. Click Save, name the file and choose where it goes.

Apple's export guide covers the other options, such as exporting only some slides.

Add your face in Keynote

Apple describes Record Slideshow as voice narration. To show your face, Keynote can put a live video from your Mac's camera on a slide, with a mask shape and rounded corners. Add it to the slides where you want to appear.

How to record a PowerPoint on Mac

PowerPoint for Mac records your voice, and in Microsoft 365 your camera too, slide by slide. Menu names vary a little between versions, but the flow is the same.

  1. Open the presentation and go to the slide you want to start on.
  2. On the Slide Show tab, click Record Slide Show. In current Microsoft 365 versions, there's also a Record button near the top right of the window.
  3. In the recording view, turn the camera and microphone on or off with their icons.
  4. Click the red Record button. After a countdown, start speaking.
  5. Use the arrow keys to move between slides, and Pause when you need a break.
  6. Click Stop, or End Show, when you're done.

To redo a slide, select Clear in the recording view and record it again. Your notes appear at the top of the recording screen like a teleprompter in newer versions, per Microsoft's Record your presentation guide.

Add your camera with Cameo

In PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, Insert > Cameo places your live camera feed on a slide, where you can resize and style it. Microsoft's Presenting with cameo page explains it.

Export the PowerPoint as a video

  1. Choose File > Export. Not Save As, which has no video options.
  2. Choose MP4 or MOV as the file format.
  3. Pick a quality: Ultra HD (4K), Full HD (1080p), HD (720p) or Standard (480p).
  4. Check Use Recorded Timings and Narrations.
  5. Click Export.

Microsoft's Mac export guide notes that narration is included in exported videos from version 16.19, and that animations don't play in the movie. If your deck leans on animations, screen record it instead.

How to screen record a presentation with audio on Mac

Screen recording works for any slides: Google Slides, Canva, a PDF in Preview, or Keynote and PowerPoint when you'd rather record it all in one take. It also catches animations exactly as they play, and lets you switch to a live demo mid-talk.

  1. Open your slides and get ready to present.
  2. Press ⇧⌘5. Choose Record Entire Screen, or on macOS 26 Tahoe and later, Record Selected Window.
  3. Click Options and choose your microphone under Microphone. None records a silent video.
  4. If your slides play video or sound, and you're on macOS 27 Golden Gate, also choose Include System Audio. On macOS 15 and 26 the built-in recorder can't capture the Mac's own sound; see how to screen record on Mac with audio for the ways around it.
  5. Click Record, start the slideshow, and present.
  6. Stop with the Stop button in the menu bar, or ⌃⌘Esc.

QuickTime's File > New Screen Recording opens the same toolbar. Afterward, Edit > Trim (⌘T) cuts the start and end.

Record your presentation with your camera

The built-in recorder doesn't film you. A recorder app can record your camera at the same time and place it over the slides, as a bubble or side by side. In Smooth Recorder:

  1. Press ⌥1 and click your slideshow window, or drag an area, or pick the whole screen.
  2. On the bar under the selection, turn on Camera and pick your camera. It's off by default.
  3. Pick your Microphone. A level meter moves when it hears you, so you know you're being recorded before you start.
  4. Leave Mac sound on if your slides play video or sound, and off if they don't.
  5. Press R and present. The controls sit in a pill in the notch, out of your slides' way.

Afterward, Studio places your camera in one of six layouts (a bubble, a circle, an upright portrait, or split beside the slides), and Show Only Camera at Playhead lets just your camera fill the frame for an intro or a sign-off before the slides come back. It also adds captions transcribed on your Mac, so people can follow without sound. Delete words from the transcript to cut those parts of the video, remove filler words such as "um" in one click, and use Trim Silences to cut long pauses. It can export MP4 or MOV up to 60 fps, reframed to 16:9, 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5 for wherever you're posting it. It's a native Mac app for macOS 15 and later, $19 once during early access; see pricing.

Tips for a better presentation recording

Sound first. People forgive soft video, not muddy audio. A USB or headset mic close to your mouth beats the laptop mic across the desk. Record in a small, soft room, and do a 10-second test before the real take.

Avoid Bluetooth mics. When AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones are used as a microphone, macOS switches them to a lower-quality mode. Choose the built-in mic or a USB mic instead.

Record in sections. Record one section at a time, especially in Keynote and PowerPoint, where you can redo a single slide. A long single take means starting over for one stumble.

Turn on Do Not Disturb. Notifications show up in a screen recording, and their sounds end up in it too when system audio is on.

Clean up the screen. Hide desktop icons and close tabs and apps you don't need. Record only the slideshow window or area if you can.

Check the size before you share. A 4K export is huge. 1080p is plenty for most slides, and keeps uploads quick.

Troubleshooting

The exported Keynote movie has no voice. In File > Export To > Movie, set Playback to Slideshow Recording, not Self-Playing.

The PowerPoint video has no narration. Check Use Recorded Timings and Narrations in the Export window, and update PowerPoint if you're on a version older than 16.19.

The first words on each PowerPoint slide are cut. PowerPoint doesn't record during transitions. Wait until the slide has changed before you speak.

There's no MP4 or MOV in PowerPoint's export. Use File > Export, not Save As. If the options are still missing, check your PowerPoint version under PowerPoint > About PowerPoint.

The screen recording is silent. In ⇧⌘5 > Options, the microphone may be set to None. In an app, check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.

A video in your slides plays with no sound in the recording. That's the Mac's own sound. Turn on Include System Audio on macOS 27, or use a recorder that records system audio on macOS 15 and 26.

The camera doesn't show up. Check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and turn on the app. Then quit and reopen it.
