Screen Studio costs $29 a month, or $9 a month on the yearly plan ($108 a year), as of October 2026. Both plans include every feature, so the only choice is how you pay. One-time licenses are no longer sold, students and educators get 40% off, and fees are non-refundable. Below is what you get for the money, who it's worth it for, and what cheaper options cost over one and three years.
Screen Studio plans and prices
Screen Studio has two plans. They're identical in features; its pricing page says "Every Screen Studio feature is available in every plan."
| Plan | Price | Per year | What's included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yearly | $9 a month | $108 | All features, export up to 4K at 60 fps, shareable links, cloud transcript, shared projects, new features as they ship |
| Monthly | $29 a month | $348 | Exactly the same |
The yearly plan is labeled "Save 69%," and the math checks out: $108 against $348 a year on monthly billing. Unless you only need Screen Studio for a month or two, yearly is the sensible way to pay.
A few details that pricing pages don't always make clear:
- There's no free tier or cheaper "lite" plan. You pay for the full app or nothing.
- There's no team plan on the pricing page. Each person subscribes on their own. For five people on the yearly plan, that's $540 a year.
- It's Mac only. Screen Studio's FAQ says there are no near-future plans for a Windows version. It recommends macOS Ventura 13.1 or later.
What you get for the money
Screen Studio is a recorder and editor built to make screen recordings look produced without hours of editing. It records the screen and the cursor separately, so it can redraw the cursor afterward: smoother, bigger, or hidden while it rests. On top of that, according to its site, you get:
- Automatic zooms that follow what you click, plus manual zooms you can add and edit.
- Backgrounds, padding and shadows, saved as presets you can share with your team.
- Editing by transcript, with filler words and long pauses removed in one pass, plus trimming and speed-ups.
- Captions made on your Mac, with several text and animation styles, and an optional cloud transcription.
- Voice cleanup (noise reduction and a "Podcast" mode) that runs on your Mac.
- iPhone and iPad recording over a USB cable, framed in a matching device mockup.
- Masks to hide sensitive data and highlight the part that matters.
- Sharing: links with comments and view counts, editable projects you can send to a teammate, MP4 up to 4K at 60 fps, and GIF export.
- Extras like speaker notes, AI voiceover, background music, keystrokes on screen and click sounds.
That's a lot of polish, refined over several years. The one thing it doesn't do is screenshots: no annotated screenshots, scrolling captures or copying text from the screen, so most people keep a second app for those.
Screen Studio lifetime license: what happened to it
Screen Studio used to sell one-time licenses. It doesn't any more. Its FAQ says purchasing one-time licenses "was possible in the past, but is no longer available for new purchases."
If you bought a lifetime license back then:
- It's still valid. You can keep using the version you're entitled to.
- Updates can lapse. If your access to updates has expired, the FAQ says you can renew your license at any time to get the latest updates and features again.
- You activate it with your license key. Screen Studio's guide says the license-key option in the activation window is only for these legacy one-time licenses; subscribers sign in with their email.
So if you're searching for a "Screen Studio lifetime license" today, the only ones that exist are licenses people already own.
Screen Studio discount and free trial
The education discount
The only public Screen Studio discount is for education. Students and educators get 40% off. If you have an email address from a university or other educational institution, the discount is applied automatically on its educational discount page. If you don't, you can email proof of student status, such as a student ID, to Screen Studio and they'll send a discount code.
At 40% off, the $108 yearly plan would come to about $64.80 a year.
We didn't find any other coupon or seasonal sale on Screen Studio's own site as of October 2026, so be wary of third-party "promo code" pages.
Is there a free trial?
Screen Studio's pricing page and FAQ don't describe a free trial as of October 2026. The app is a free download, so open it and see what it lets you do before you pay.
That matters because of the refund rules. Screen Studio's terms of service say fees are paid in advance, are non-refundable, and the subscription renews automatically at the same rate unless you cancel before the renewal. You can cancel any time, and the cancellation takes effect at the end of the period you've paid for.
Is Screen Studio worth it?
It depends on how often you record and who pays.
It's worth it if:
- You make product demos, tutorials, launch videos or social clips every week. At $108 a year and one video a week, that's about $2 a video.
- Your company pays, or it's a business expense.
- You want its specific extras: iPhone and iPad recording with device frames, shareable links with comments, shared projects for a team, AI voiceover.
- You value a tool that's been refined for years and has plenty of tutorials and presets around it.
It's probably not worth it if:
- You record a few videos a year. On the yearly plan, one demo a month still works out to $9 a video.
- You dislike subscriptions, or want to own the tool outright. That's no longer an option with Screen Studio.
- You also need screenshot tools and don't want to pay for two apps.
- You're on Windows, which Screen Studio doesn't support.
If you're in the second group, the good news is that automatic zooms and a smooth cursor are no longer unique to Screen Studio.

Screen Studio's prices are as of October 2026; the others are as of September 2026, from Cap, CleanShot, Screen Charm and FocuSee. Cap is also free for personal use.
What the numbers say:
- Every one-time option here costs less than two years of Screen Studio yearly ($216), and most cost less than one.
- Smooth Recorder at $19 is $305 less than three years of Screen Studio's yearly plan, and still $275 less at its regular $49.
- Even FocuSee's lifetime license ($199.99) costs less than two years of Screen Studio ($216).
- Monthly billing is the expensive path: $1,044 over three years.
In short:
- Smooth Recorder is a native Mac app with automatic zooms on your clicks, a smooth cursor, captions made on your Mac, cutting by editing the transcript, six camera layouts, and screenshots, scrolling capture and text capture in the same app. It's $19 once during early access ($49 regular), with no account. See Screen Studio vs Smooth Recorder.
- Cap is open source, runs on Mac and Windows, and is free for personal use.
- CleanShot X is the pick if screenshots are most of your day; version 5.0 added smart zooms.
- Screen Charm is a pay-once recorder for Apple Silicon Macs, with lifetime updates.
- FocuSee runs on Mac and Windows and has a lifetime tier.
We compare all of these, plus Tella and Camtasia, feature by feature in our Screen Studio alternatives guide. If you're choosing between Screen Studio and a screenshot-first app, read Screen Studio vs CleanShot X.
How to pay less for Screen Studio
If you've decided Screen Studio is the right tool, a few ways to keep the cost down:
- Pay yearly, not monthly. $108 instead of $348 a year, for the same features.
- Use the education discount if you're a student or teach. It's 40% off, and automatic with a school email.
- Renew an old license instead of subscribing, if you already own a one-time license from before.
- Cancel before the renewal date if you only need it for a project. Your access runs to the end of the period you paid for.
- Don't buy a second app you don't need. If you also want screenshots, compare the total cost of Screen Studio plus a screenshot tool against one app that does both.
Bottom line
Screen Studio pricing is simple: $29 a month or $108 a year, every feature on both plans, 40% off for education, no lifetime license for new buyers and no refunds. For people who make polished videos every week, it's money well spent. For everyone else, a pay-once recorder gets you automatic zooms and a smooth cursor for less than a year of the subscription.
