When WebM won't play

WebM is small and sharp, but many apps and sites don't accept it. A GIF plays almost everywhere, at the cost of a bigger file and no sound.

On a Mac, Smooth Recorder records a GIF of any part of your screen directly. Read how to record a GIF on Mac.

Questions, answered.

Should I convert WebM to GIF?

Only if the place you're posting doesn't accept WebM. A GIF is usually bigger and has fewer colors, so keep the video where you can.

Is it really free?

Yes. There's no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many GIFs you make. Each GIF can be up to 30 seconds long.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the file and makes the GIF on your device, so the video never reaches our server.

Why is my GIF bigger than the video?

GIF is an old format that stores video far less efficiently. To shrink one, make it shorter, narrower or lower its frame rate. Around 640 pixels wide at 10 to 15 frames per second suits most uses.

Does the GIF keep its sound?

No. GIFs can't hold sound. If the sound matters, share the video instead.
